Compensation for Accidents at Work

Work accidents are a very common occurrence and employers should keep records of work related accidents or deaths, serious injuries, industrial diseases and other dangerous occurrences which may happen. These might include near misses from scaffold collapsing, or from explosions or escaping dangerous substances. Employers should have personal injury insurance in place to cover them for any incidents that may occur in the workplace.

Employees should always take extra care at work as it can be a dangerous place. Employers, meanwhile, have a duty to make sure that their work place is a completely safe working environment at all times.

No one accident circumstance is the same as another and there can be different reasons why certain accidents happen and not others. It may not be necessary to report every occurrence. The Health and Safety Executive website (HSE) has more information on the different types of accidents in the workplace.

Injuries that must be reported are amputations, broken arms, ribs or legs, blindings, unconsciousness, resuscitation and admittance to a hospital for a period of more than 24 hours. A reported accident also includes any injury that prevents an employee from carrying out their work for a certain number of days.

  • If you suffer a work place accident you should report, or ask a work colleague to report, the circumstances as quickly as possible.
  • If you have suffered with an injury, make sure you log the incident with your supervisor immediately, or with your manager.
  • You should seek medical attention if needed, or seek the attention of a trained first aider, and ensure the accident is logged in the accident book.
  • You should also request a copy of the form for your own records as this will assist you when you come to make your claim for personal injury. You may need gp treatment or hospital treatment after your accident.
  • You should also make a note of any changes after your accident.
